Melissa Joseph • Tender • Brooklyn Museum • 06.06.–22.11.2025
Melissa Joseph’s solo public installation “Tender” is on view at the Brooklyn Museum’s Iris Cantor Plaza until November 22, 2025.
For the show, Joseph draws on her distinctive fiber-based practice to explore themes of connection, memory, and cultural inheritance. Framing intimate scenes—friends eating, resting, embracing—within hexagonal compositions inspired by the marble mosaics of Siena Cathedral, she highlights the emotional resonance of everyday encounters. Enlarged reproductions of these works are installed outdoors, accessible day and night, encouraging quiet reflection away from the digital noise of daily life.
The show is part of Joseph’s 2025 UOVO Prize, which also includes a 50-by-50-foot mural on the facade of UOVO’s Bushwick facility, on view from June 2025 to June 2026. The mural expands on the installation’s themes by translating her contemplative practice into a monumental public setting.
The exhibition was curated by Kimberli Gant and Indira A. Abiskaroon.
“Tender” is on view until November 22, 2025
