With an astute instinct for the aesthetics of everyday life – its incidental humour and unintentional beauty – Grace Weaver (b. 1989, Vermont, US) depicts the familiar imagery of our present day. From “coffee to go,” smartphone usage, and relationships to the health craze & gender dynamics, her work offers intimate, personal glimpses into everyday occurrences. These scenes not only touch upon psychological themes, such as self-optimisation, self-care, and self-criticism, but also reveal moments where – amidst the lightness of being – a subtle melancholy makes itself felt.
In the exhibition “Little Sister“, Weaver uses a highly pared-down visual language to trace the finest nuances and codes of human body language and behaviour, blending diverse artistic influences ranging from Henri Matisse and Alex Katz to The Simpsons. The focus lies on interpersonal connections and the spaces between people: whether a young protagonist is caught deep in thought about a romantic partner or is consciously styling a new identity, Weaver’s works consistently adopt a female perspective, allowing us to see the world through her eyes.
